Cabinet door size calculator
Enter the cabinet size and the calculator gives the door size. Quick answer for the common case: a full-overlay door on an 18mm cabinet is the cabinet width minus 4mm and the cabinet height minus 4mm, so a 600 × 720mm cabinet takes a 596 × 716mm door.
If you still have the old door, measure that instead; it is more reliable than any formula. This calculator is for cabinets with no door, new carcasses, or doors that were planed down.
How the numbers work
Full overlay. The door covers the whole 18mm cabinet side, less a gap to the next door. Width = cabinet width − gap. A pair = (cabinet width − 2 × gap) ÷ 2 each, so the centre gap equals the outside gap.
Half overlay. Two doors share one cabinet side (common where cabinets are joined). Each door covers 9mm of the shared side instead of 18mm, so it is 9mm narrower on that side. Width = cabinet width − gap − 9 for a door sharing one side.
Inset. The door sits inside the opening. Width = opening − 2 × gap, and the opening is the cabinet width minus two 18mm sides.
Height. Door height = cabinet height − top clearance − bottom clearance. 2mm each is normal on base and overhead cabinets; use 0 at the bottom of a base cabinet if the kickboard is fitted under the door, or 4 to 5mm if the door sits under a benchtop overhang that needs clearance.

Questions people ask
What size door do I need for a 600mm kitchen cabinet?
For a full-overlay door on a standard 600mm wide, 720mm high base cabinet, the door is 596 × 716mm (2mm clearance on each side). If the 600mm cabinet has two doors, each is 296 × 716mm with a 4mm centre gap. Half-overlay doors on shared panels are 9mm narrower per shared side. Use our door size calculator for other cabinet sizes.
What is the standard height of kitchen cabinet doors in Australia?
Base cabinet doors are typically 715 to 720mm high for a 720mm carcass. Overhead doors are 600, 720 or 900mm. Pantry and tall doors run 1,200 to 2,000mm. Widths follow the cabinet: 296, 396, 446, 496 and 596mm for 300 to 600mm cabinets with full overlay.
What is the smallest and largest door you can make?
From 100 × 100mm up to 1,200mm wide and 2,400mm high. Doors over 600mm wide or 2,000mm high need extra hinges and we will say so on the quote.
