Handle hole position calculator
Quick answer: on a base door the handle goes on the edge opposite the hinges, top corner, with the first hole about 35mm in from the side edge and 35 to 50mm down from the top. Overhead doors mirror that at the bottom corner. Drawer fronts take the handle centred both ways. Hole spacing is the handle's centre-to-centre size, most often 96, 128 or 160mm.

Conventions worth following
Handles on a run of base doors all sit at the same height, so set the inset once and use it everywhere. A vertical handle on a base door starts at the top corner; on an overhead door it starts at the bottom corner, so the handles on both face the benchtop. Tall pantry doors usually take a long handle centred around 1,000 to 1,100mm from the floor, which is roughly a third of the way down a 2,000mm door.
Horizontal handles on doors sit in the top corner of base doors and bottom corner of overheads, the same inset from the side edge. Drawer fronts are centred, and a wide drawer (over 900mm) often takes two handles at the quarter points.
If you are reusing old handles
Measure the old door's holes from the top edge and the side edge, and the centre-to-centre distance between them, and send those three numbers. Common centres are 96, 128, 160 and 192mm; a quick check is to measure between the screw heads on the back. If the old doors had knobs, the single hole is normally at the same inset both ways.
